Kirstin Sinclair Talk
We had the chance to have a talk given to us by fashion photographer Kirstin Sinclair.
About Kirstin Sinclair
Kirstin Sinclair completed her Fine Art degree and specialised in photography. Prior to this she completed foundation year which was compulsory at that time in order to do a degree in Fine Art in Cardiff. They were given the option to look into three different types of media before making a decision in what they wanted to specialise in. She initially thought that she was going to be a painter although after her lecturer saw her work, she did for a photography module she was redirected to photography as he saw she had potential.
Photographer who influence her work are Sally Man, Nan Goldin, Nick Knight and Tim Walker. Sinclair chose to work as a photographer as she thinks it is a very versatile job as there are many different routes in photography.
Career overview
Sinclair began her photography journey as a darkroom and studio assistant for a photographer. She then worked as a studio & studio assistant for a different photographer where she learnt many skills in the office and how to run a business, about shoot production, hiring assistants, booking shoots and many other things. She was also an Intern at InStyle Magazine, being someone who wanted to be a photographer she did not understand the different roles at a magazine company. Being an intern, she was able to understand how things worked on the magazine side of things once images get sent to them, how they chose photographers and better understood the layout of a magazine and what they would expect from a photographer on a shoot.
Whilst working at the magazine Sinclair was introduced to a photographer who was working at catwalk shows. She received photography training from her, teaching her all the different roles such as photo editing. She travelled to different catwalk shows around the world as her editor. Being part of this photographer’s team primarily as an editor Sinclair then progressed further and became front row seat photographer and street style, candid, documentary photographs at the catwalks shows in New York, London, Milan and Paris. It was through this photographer that Sinclair was introduced to the fashion industry.
Through this Sinclair was able to work alongside other photographers which does not happen much as a photographer who might work in a studio. She worked alongside the catwalk photographers, backstage photographers and celebrity photographers which gave Sinclair a great opportunity to learn more aspects of photography from them.

After shooting at catwalks for 8 years and working at the Fashion & Textiles museum as an event Photographer they offered her to have her exhibition. It was there that she was introduced to publishers who published her book. Once Getty, the leading picture library in the world, reached out to her after having visited the exhibition which she did not about, had an interview with them and was asked to become one of their contributors. She gets assignments from Getty which are similar to freelance work from and gets paid separately for alongside a monthly pay, which increased the more her archive grew each month. No matter how much the separate assignment images sell she only gets paid once for it. That can vary on how many images get sold each month.
Assignments set from Getty include taking photographs at parties for example Burberry Christmas Party and other events such as The Royal Ascot, Net-A-Porter and the launch of Heathrow Terminal 5. Sinclair takes the photographs and the photographs are then given to the editors.

Prior to working with Getty Sinclair was a freelance photographer and carried on working as so. She has many contacts and databases and as Sinclair does not have an official agent Getty acts like her agent, whenever she needs advice for example legal advice for contracts, she has with clients Getty help her with that. As Getty is an international company even when Sinclair is abroad, she can still be working by completing assignments they think she is suitable for.
Her main focuses are :
Fashion/ Beauty
Health/ Lifestyle/ Fitness
Street Style
Editorial/ Publications
Advertising / Campaigns
Portraits/Features
Products/Look books
Digital/ Social Media
Sinclair mentions it is good to be versatile because different roles attract more clients.

Q&A
A question I asked was " What was the process of doing an internship and applying, did you reach out to people and how is that process?
Her reply : LinkedIn, The Dots, lots of different ways now to connect with the right editors who are looking for interns , so I'd definitely have a look there and see if they're advertising for internships at all. I'd also have a look at their social media platforms. I'd follow the people you're interested in interning for and keep and eye on their socials or even contact them and see if they get back to you that way.
As fashion photography is something I want to do in the future I found this talk very useful as I know have an insight into how fashion photographers work and where to find out more information if I need it.
